84th Anniversary Of Pearl Harbor Honored With National Day Of Remembrance

President Donald Trump issued a proclamation Friday designating December 7, 2025, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, marking 84 years since the surprise attack that propelled the United States into World War II.

The annual observance honors the 2,403 service members and civilians killed in the 1941 Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor and nearby military installations.

In his proclamation, Trump reflected on how a peaceful Sunday morning on Oahu was shattered when the Empire of Japan launched an unprovoked strike on the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the aircraft and hangars at Kaneohe, Ford Island, Barbers Point, and Hickam Field.

“The Japanese mission was designed to cripple our military assets and obliterate the American spirit, but instead, the fatal attacks rallied our shattered citizenry and fueled our resolve,” Trump stated.

The president highlighted how young Americans put their futures on hold to join a war effort of global consequence. Although “untested in battle,” these patriots united in the mission “to defeat tyranny,” demonstrating “exceptional courage” and “immeasurable sacrifices” that secured freedom for future generations.

Trump also emphasized how the former adversary has become a close partner in the decades since the “date which will live in infamy,” noting that Japan is now “one of our closest security partnerships,” with U.S. and Japanese forces working together daily.

“Our strong alliance is a testament to the transformational power of peace, diplomacy, and democracy,” the proclamation stated.

Trump said the lessons of December 7 continue to resonate, calling on Americans to “remain ever vigilant and prepared to annihilate any foe who dares to threaten our liberty.” He urged federal agencies and organizations to fly flags at half-staff on December 7 in honor of those who died as a result of the attack.

Congress established National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day through Public Law 103-308, ensuring the events of that day are commemorated annually.
